Paragliding Fabric Degradation Test
The Fabric Degradation Test is a tear-resistance test designed for use on fabrics such as aircraft ‘skins’, sails, and parachutes. It is important to maintain the fabric's residual tensile strength throughout its service life without damaging it.
The sail of your paraglider is tested to withstand a tension of 3-5kN (306 - 510 g). If the fabric does not tear or tears by more than 5 mm, the test is a pass; otherwise, it fails. We also test the internal ribs, which are important structural parts of your paraglider.
The Fabric Degradation Inspection leverages the direct relationship between tensile strength and resistance to tearing, without disturbing the structures or surfaces under scrutiny. According to the Fabric Degradation Inspection instructions, damage to the fabric will occur only if the strength falls below the minimum strength specified by the manufacturer, in which case renewal or non-airworthiness is assumed.
Stitching is equally subject to ageing and weakening by UV and other factors.
