NOVA Xenon is a new lightweight EN-D 2-liner, developed for the Red Bull X-Alps 2021

Nitinol the shape memory alloy used in high-end paragliders, F14 fighter jet, Mars Rower and many more cool gadgets. What makes it such a cool material for paragliding wings. Nitinol has exceptionally high elasticity at low transformation temperature and this is what makes it so appealing as a replacement for the plastic rods used inside the glider. There is more to Nitinol than just the shape memory effect. It can also be super-elastic. If the alloy is created to have a low transformation temperature, below room temperature then it's already in that phase of its final shape. So when we try to deform it bounces right back. The transformation temperatures in Nitinol are altered by the ratio of nickel and titanium used that way Nitinol can reshape and bend predictably. The additional cost of using Nitinol for paraglider instead of the standard plastic rods varies based on the amount of material used and the added cost will be between 200€ to 400€ based on the length and diameter of the Nitinol rods.

THE MAGIC TRIANGLE: WEIGHT - DURABILITY - PERFORMANCE
Of course, a wing for the @Red Bull X-Alps should be as light as possible. But it should also fly as well as possible - and ideally for as long as possible. That's why we use a mix of three different cloth for the XENON. For the upper sail at the leading and trailing edge, we choose slightly heavier, but therefore also more dimensionally stable fabrics for performance reasons. For the leading edge, we use the dimensionally stable and UV-resistant Dominico 20D (34 g/m2). On the upper surface trailing edge, we also set priority on stability over minimal weight and chose Skytex27 C2 (29 g/m2). On the entire undersurface and most of the topsail, we use Dominico 10D (25 g/m2), which is outstanding in terms of weight, packing volume and UV resistance. The entire internal construction is made from Skytex27 hard (27 g/m2) that has been additionally reinforced at particularly loaded points on the profile ribs and diagonal ribs. For this reason, the serial production XENON is 100 % the same as the wings flown by @Theo de Blic, @Ken Oguma and @Nick Donini at the X-Alps.
