SPOT versus Garmin InReach Prices and Annual Plans

SPOT

SPOT Basic Annual plan will cost $184.20 USD (260 AUD) plus the annual Network Maintenance Fee $21.95 USD ($30 AUD). Total per year $290 AUD. 

SPOT Flex Basic Monthly plan will cost $18.65 USD (26 AUD) per month plus the annual Network Maintenance Fee $21.95 USD ($30 AUD). Total cost per 6 months $186 AUD. This plan allows to start and stop the service at any time so you can only use your satellite tracker during the moths that you are flying and stop the service during the off season. Enrolment in any Flex Plan is subject to an Annual Flex Charge Fee $27.45 USD ($38 AUD). that is collected once per year at renewal, even if the device is suspended at that time. This Flex charge allows you to suspend the service at any time during the year without activation fee recurrence when turning service on again. All Flex Plans have a one month minimum term.

GARMIN InReach

InReach SAFETY Plan is $240 per year plus $0.15 AUD for each tracking point. So to get to the cost of the annual plan of SPOT you have 83 hours of tracking with 10 minutes interval to match the price difference of $75 between the InReach SAFETY  Plan and SPOT Annual plan. You can send the tracking interval to longer time and get more tracking hours for the same price. 

The InReach RECREATION Plan with unlimited tracking will cost $480 per year so you will pay extra $165 per year in comparison with SPOT for two way communication, better and more reliable satellite coverage and unlimited tracking.

The InReach SAFETY FREEDOM Plan will cost $25 AUD per month plus the annual Network Maintenance Fee $37 AUD. Total cost per 6 months $187 AUD. This plan allows to start and stop the service at any time so you can only use your satelite tracker during the moths that you are flying and stop the service during the off season. Freedom plans minimum term is 30 days.

Summary

SPOT is set and forget easy and works everywhere in Australia. InReach offers a better service, satellite coverage and two-way communication. InReach will be cheaper than SPOT for pilots that don't fly as much, who set the longer tracking interval and those who turn off the service when they don't use it.

 

Satellite Network 

    • InReach is using a  Global Iridium Satellite Network with 100% coverage.
    • SPOT is using the Globalstar Satellite Network which doesn't cover 100% of the entire globe.
